Welcome back, fellow readers! Make sure to take a moment to grab a coffee, tea, or drink of choice, and settle in as we get started! Today’s topic is one of our favorites, so much so that it’s part of our name! We’ll be talking about Coffee Haciendas (Estates) that can be found throughout the island!
Coffee in Puerto Rico
In the mid-18th century, when Puerto Rico was a Spanish colony, coffee beans were brought to the island and tested to see if they proved to be fruitful. It was quickly realized that the land was perfect for growing coffee, and soon enough, this became one of Puerto Rico’s primary agricultural products throughout the 1800’s. Despite there being such a large ‘boom’ in the coffee industry, obstacles such as challenging weather, a shortage of workers, competing prices, and a transition into an industrial economy would soon take hold of the progress made.
Currently, Puerto Rican haciendas make up a little less than 30% of domestic coffee consumption. Although challenging weather and a shortage of labor workers persist, some haciendas have turned to the community for help and have remained open and running. Let’s take a look below at a few of these haciendas that you can visit and, of course, with a hot cup of coffee to look forward to after an educational tour!
Starting off in the central mid-western region of the island, you will find Hacienda Tres Ángeles. With tours and coffee tastings set for all those interested, this hacienda will show you some of the most beautiful sights one can find within this small mountainside.
Hidden in the mountainous center of Puerto Rico is a coffee hacienda gem that had been running for just over 90 years! Enjoy a delicious meal at their very own Café as you venture around the property and its rich history!
Ready to visit the southern part of the island? Visit Hacienda Buena Vista, located on a mountain where you will find yourself at the center of the hacienda’s history. As you learn of the hacienda’s history, you will get to see other goods that are grown such as cacao, plantain, oranges, and other fruits!
Inspired by the traditional ways of the original haciendas, Café Lealtad is grown with the utmost care in the central western region of the island. Reserve your and your family’s spot at one of their many tours that dive into the delicious world of coffee. Enjoy the rustic facilities surrounded by the vibrant nature that surrounds it!
